What is an option chain?

An option chain is a table showing all Call (CE) and Put (PE) options available for a stock or index at different strike prices and expiry dates. It displays Open Interest, volume, implied volatility (IV), last traded price (LTP) and Greeks for each strike.

How do I read the option chain?

The option chain has Calls (CE) on the left and Puts (PE) on the right, with strike prices in the center. Rising OI with rising price = long buildup (bullish). Rising OI with falling price = short buildup (bearish). The ATM (at-the-money) strike is highlighted.

What is the ATM strike?

ATM (At-The-Money) is the strike price closest to the current spot price of the index. For example, if NIFTY is trading at 24,350 and strike gaps are 50 points, the ATM strike is 24,350. ATM options are the most actively traded and most sensitive to price changes.

What is OI (Open Interest)?

Open Interest is the total number of outstanding option contracts that have not been settled or exercised. High OI at a strike indicates strong interest and often acts as support (for Put OI below spot) or resistance (for Call OI above spot).

What is PCR (Put-Call Ratio)?

PCR = Total Put OI / Total Call OI . PCR > 1.2 usually suggests bullish sentiment (option writers are comfortable selling puts). PCR < 0.8 suggests bearish sentiment (writers are selling calls). PCR between 0.8–1.2 is considered neutral.

What is Max Pain in options trading?

Max Pain is the strike price where option writers (sellers) face the minimum total loss at expiry — meaning option buyers experience maximum loss. Since writers are usually institutional, Max Pain often acts as a magnet price that spot tends to gravitate toward on expiry day.

How is Max Pain calculated?

Max Pain is calculated by summing the total rupee value that option writers would have to pay out at every possible expiry level. The strike with the smallest total payout is the Max Pain strike.

Does NIFTY always close near Max Pain on expiry?

No — Max Pain is a probabilistic indicator, not a guarantee. While NIFTY often closes near Max Pain on expiry (especially when spot is close), strong news or institutional flows can push price away. Use it alongside price action and PCR.

Which is more reliable: NIFTY Max Pain or Bank Nifty Max Pain?

Both are calculated the same way, but Bank Nifty tends to have sharper moves toward Max Pain due to higher volatility and leverage. NIFTY Max Pain is generally more stable and reliable for longer holding periods.

How often does Max Pain change?

Max Pain can shift throughout the day as fresh OI comes in. Major changes happen at market open, after big news, and during the last hour of the day. We refresh it every 2 minutes.

What are Option Greeks?

Greeks measure how an option's price responds to different factors: Delta (spot price change), Gamma (delta change), Theta (time decay), Vega (volatility change) and Rho (interest rate change).

What is Delta in options?

Delta represents how much an option's price changes when the underlying moves by ₹1. A Call with Delta 0.5 gains ₹0.50 if NIFTY rises by 1 point. ATM options have Delta around ±0.5, deep ITM options approach ±1, and deep OTM options approach 0.

Gamma measures how much Delta changes when the spot moves. High Gamma means Delta changes rapidly — you find peak Gamma near ATM strikes close to expiry. Gamma is what makes options explosive near expiry.

What is Theta (time decay)?

Theta is the daily time decay — how much value an option loses each day as expiry approaches. Theta is always negative for long options. Short-expiry options decay fast; that's why option sellers love Theta.

Vega measures how much an option's price changes for a 1% change in Implied Volatility. High Vega means the option is very sensitive to IV changes. Long options are positive Vega; short options are negative Vega.
