Frequently Asked Questions
What is mutual fund portfolio overlap?
Portfolio overlap measures how many stocks two mutual funds have in common. If two funds in your portfolio hold the same stocks, you are not as diversified as you think. High overlap means both funds will move in the same direction during market swings, which defeats the purpose of spreading risk across multiple funds. Ideally, funds in your portfolio should have low overlap.
How is the overlap percentage calculated?
We compare the latest disclosed portfolios of both funds and calculate overlap based on common stock holdings weighted by their allocation. If Fund A has 10% in Reliance and Fund B has 8% in Reliance, the overlapping weight for that stock is the lower of the two (8%). The total overlap is the sum of all such common weights. A higher percentage means more duplication in your portfolio.
